“Tucker Falls” is about an old widowed rancher’s inability or desire to change with his world around him. It is also about a father's relationship with his children, about loss of affection and understanding, about loss of culture and lifestyle, about love, and about the implications of living longer, whether Tucker wants to or not.
Tucker is old and wealthy and still lives on his sprawling ranch in the southwest. As the play opens, he is talking to his wife Katherine who has been dead for 20 years. He feels he is nearing the end of his own life and tells Katherine he has decided to give their three daughters her heirlooms. The two older daughters, Abigail and Rachel, scheming to turn the ranch into a housing development, are thrilled with the offer. Katie, their younger sister and Tucker's favorite, is shocked and hurt by what appears to be her father's surrender to his inevitable mortality.
Tucker’s offer sets in motion a series of conflicts between the old man and his daughters, and the daughters themselves; between Tucker and his dead wife, and within the love affair between Katie and Tucker's hired hand, whom Tucker has virtually raised as his own son.
